Tileyard Studios are a new force in London’s music industry, with a cluster of 400 leading businesses in performance, management, production and technology. Pilbrow & Partners have been commissioned to provide a masterplan to guide the future growth of Tileyard’s Kings Cross Estate.
Pilbrow & Partners secured consent on behalf of Tileyard Studios for a 70,000sqft NIA flexible workplace building in Kings Cross.
Tileyard have grown over the last decade to become Europe’s largest music and entertainment cluster. Much of this growth has been within existing buildings and Tileyard have struggled to deliver larger scale specialist recording studios to the highest acoustic and operational standards. The new building, with its generous clear heights and open structural grid, meets this need.
Tileyard Studios are a new force in London’s music industry, with a cluster of 400 leading businesses in performance, management, production and technology. Pilbrow & Partners have been commissioned to provide a masterplan to guide the future growth of Tileyard’s Kings Cross Estate.
The practice is designing two buildings in detail within this framework: a flexible workplace on York Way and a state-of-the-art symphonic recording studio on Vale Royal.
The studio will double as an event space and is set at the heart of a range of new facilities to support companies on the site including health, exhibition, hotel and conference space. A new Club forms the apex of the proposed building.
The new workplace building on York Way will do more than meet the growing demand for space generated from the success of the existing Tileyard Campus. Much of the current accommodation has had to be created in existing buildings which are compromised in terms of their flexibility, design and performance. As companies grow, they demand larger floor plates to facilitate communication.
They also look to increase the quality of their working environment and both ambitions are met by the new Tileyard Studios building.
The Tileyard studios building is designed to provide the flexible and environmentally sustainable workplace sought by leading companies in the creative sector. Bright, light and tall studio floors are served from an offset side core set on the southern boundary.
The building adopts innovative and progressive environmental strategies to deliver a low energy healthy workplace. A displacement ventilation system allied to exposed structure minimises the building’s energy requirements. Considerations of health and well-being inform the decision to allow a high degree of individual control over the building’s internal environment. Windows can be opened avoiding the need for comfort cooling in mid season.
