The proposals restore this Grade II* Listed building, dating from 1768-1774, to its former glory, enabling it to once again function effectively as a beautiful and characterful residence through sensitive adaptation, extension and restoration.
The original architecture located at 2-3 Robert Street was designed and occupied by Robert Adam in 1768-72. This remarkable building was later occupied by J M Barrie who commissioned a fine, surviving, interior by Edwin Lutyens. The original building was one of London’s very first bespoke apartment buildings arranged as a suite of private rooms for bachelors.
1-3 Robert Street is part of the Adam brothers’ infamous ‘Adelphi Terrace’ development. P&P propose to convert the building back to its original residential use by restoring the house’s important Adam interiors and the architectural organisation of the Terrace, placing a townhouse to the South and apartments to the North of the site.
The Adelphi Terrace was constructed above a grand arched and vaulted plinth which extended the ground level of the Strand towards the river Embankment. The proposals reconnect these vaulted spaces into the accommodation above through the creation of a pool and spa at lower ground floor level.
